Literature in a box.

So, even though I’ve got an ever lengthening list of other books, stories, and/or characters for which I’d like to make boxes, and even though I still have two books worth of Sherlock Holmes stories for which I have yet to make a Portable Mystery Box, I’m doing “A Study in Scarlet” again. It was the first box I made, back before I had the concept completely formed in my mind, and I didn’t come close to doing it justice. So this time I’m refurbishing another old jewelry box and doing WAY more clues. (My first box only contained three, lmao…)

The clues that I’ve made so far are in the little box next to my speaker. I haven’t taken the hardware off the box yet or anything. Maybe I can sweet talk my husband into air-brushing it for me again. #books #literature #Sherlock Holmes #Arthur Conan Doyle

I bought the wine bottle and glasses – I could have made the bottle, but I have yet to find a truly satisfactory way to make glasses and other tall-sided vessels. The dust is cigarette ash. The corkscrew was the trickiest clue. -

Thanks to my husband for airbrushing the main parts of this for me! He is the unsung hero of this project, often playing DJ and helping me with ideas. And he calls himself the Watson to my Holmes ❤️ Still have to finish up “Abbey Grange” and “The Second Stain,” but I’m starting to daydream about “The Hound of the Baskervilles!” I’ve been looking forward to this particular box, especially since my husband and I are gonna read it aloud to each other. (We do this with a few books a year, and he’s never read this one. I get to experience it for the first time with him, so it will be like new for me, too!)
I’m almost positive I’m going to turn the top into the Grimpen Mire with the hound, and a scene of Sherlock standing atop the tor with the moon behind him on the underside of the lid. The other clues will go in the drawers. I’m super excited to get started!

Clues include trodden grass, cigarette butts, a medical treatise, a bone handled sealing wax knife, a tin of cigarettes, a diary, a packet of letters, a vial of poison, a map, some of Watson’s files, etc.

Clues include a sheathed knife w/ bloody handle, a plaster fragment w/ a black pearl embedded inside, a bone handled clasp knife in a pool of blood, parsley sinking into melting butter, a fire poker, Holmes’s favorite weapon – the lead-loaded riding crop (so kinky), and plaster fragments beneath a red lamp and in grass beneath a street lamp. And paper clues that I always forget to talk about and photograph.
